He has used his own lived experiences with mental health to inspire others, and make a difference in the community.
His efforts in that sphere were recognised on Friday evening, when Mr McGill was named a winner at the Murrumbidgee Local Health District Excellence Awards.
He was awarded the Enriching Consumer Experience prize, for his works as a consumer peer worker with MyStep to Mental Wellbeing in Deniliquin.
He was nominated by his team leader and MyStep manager Amy Salmon, who said Mr McGill was very deserving of the honour.
“As a consumer peer worker, Spencer uses his lived experience of mental illness to empower and build the resilience of the people he works with,” Ms Salmon said.
“Spencer shares his own experiences of mental health and recovery with others, breaking down stigma and instilling hope.
“He has led the formation of the Peer Worker role within MyStep to Mental Wellbeing and empowers his colleagues to ensure the consumers experience is central to the care provided.”
