Benalla Hockey Club’s Perry Plex was named Goulburn Valley Hockey Association’s under-15 best and fairest recently.
Plex was named best and fairest at the association’s junior awards presentation on Saturday following the grade’s grand final, in which Benalla did not qualify to play.
He achieved the highest number of umpire best-and-fairest votes across the competition. His 22 votes eclipsed team-mate Evan Dowe on 19.
Plex, who primarily played as goalie, is in his second year playing hockey. He also played on the field at times.
Plex was also invited to play in goals for the club’s men’s B team throughout the season.
Meanwhile, Benalla’s Georgie White was awarded the GVHA Junior Female Sportsperson of the Year.
At 15 years old, White mentors her own under-15 team and also provides coaching tips to the under-13 team and helps with the Hook In2 Hockey program.
Two other Benalla juniors received nominations for GVHA junior awards: Thomas Hill was nominated for the junior male sportsperson of the year; and Alex Dowe was nominated for the Nathan Black Junior Umpiring Award.
The Benalla club’s B-women side lost 4-1 to a strong SYC side in their semi-final.
Benalla was strengthened by the return of Livinya Dean, who played a standout game, controlling the ball through the centre and out to left wing.
Benalla controlled the first half, with strong runs into the circle and narrow misses. With only five minutes left a combined run by Chittick to Perry found Cindy Daws, who scored for Benalla.
The second half saw SYC determined to score, after a penalty corner goal was disallowed on the half-time siren.
Lee Manning ran hard to make space as inner and half-back, while Alex White was well positioned on the wing for crucial passes.
The umpire’s best and fairest votes went to Sarah Chittick (3), Mel Gillies (2), and Rhonda Carpenter (1).
The Benalla men’s side plays SYC in the B-grade grand final at noon on Saturday.
