Grace Cooke puts up a shot for the Hornets in the Benalla Basketball Association’s last round.

Benalla Basketball Association’s under-12 boys and girls continued their run of high quality games in the spring domestic competition last week.

The Celtics took on the Suns and put the Suns under pressure with a 10-2 opening quarter.

The Suns, to their credit, never gave in to the pressure and fought out the first half to be down by only 10 points.

Darcy Pastuszka and Blake Calvert worked hard for the Suns, but the Celtics piled on the points and, with most of the team contributing, rounded out a 25-9 win.

On court two it was the in-form Hornets matching up against the Lakers.

Both teams threw everything into the first half in a close contest and there was nothing separating them early in the second half.

The towering Zach Schluter did his best to lead the Lakers but Jesse Liddington and the Hornets ran away in the end to take the win 24-14.

In the closest game of the round, the Heat and the Thunder battled it out on court three.

The Heat got off to a flyer but that lead quickly evaporated and the Thunder set about turning the tide and taking the momentum away from its opponents.

What resulted was a great battle for the rest of the game with Montell MacFarlane and the Thunder edging Josh Stacey and the Heat by just three points in the end, 43-40.

In the girls’ games Mavericks took on Thunder, and Hornets were up against Magic.

In the first game, Mavericks got the jump on Thunder to lead 16-8 at the end of the first half and, led by Jasmine Milner, held off the charge to take the game 26-22.

In the other game, Magic and Hornets put on a display of close and competitive basketball. Both sides took it in turns to lead during the fist half, with both playing strong defence and sharing the ball on offence.

A timeout in the second half provided the focus needed and saw the Hornets finish the better of the two teams, winning 15-12.
