Girls hit the track

Benalla Saints’ women’s football team will start its preparations for next season at the Benalla Showgrounds tonight.

The team, which made it through to the grand final of the Northern Country Women’s Football League in its first season of competition, is on the look out for new players.

Benalla Saints Sports Club last week announced the appointment of Darren Skelton and Kylie Relf as co-coaches for next year’s side.

The team will compete in the Goulburn Valley division of the league against Shepparton Bears, Echuca, Mooroopna, Kerang and two new sides, yet to be announced.

Skelton said after exceeding all expectations this season, there was strong enthusiasm among the group to continue to improve.

‘‘We enjoyed a great first season in the new competition and all indications are that there is still a high level of interest to compete strongly in 2018,’’ Skelton said.

‘‘We will conduct four or five sessions prior to Christmas before re-commencing in February and gearing up for pre-season match during March and April.

‘‘Pre-season training will be based on improving skills and understanding of the game.

‘‘Anyone who would like to have a go is most welcome to come along.

‘‘It will be fun and a good way to give it a go.’’

Co-coach Kylie Relf won the club’s inaugural best and fairest award this year and is looking forward to building on the team’s success in the coming season.

‘‘I think we surprised everyone, including ourselves, with how well we went this season, and I am looking forward to working with Darren and the other coaches to again be one of the leading teams in the competition,’’ Relf said.

‘‘It’s very exciting that we will once again be given the opportunity to play football in a regional competition that is going from strength to strength.’’

Training will start at 6pm on Wednesday nights at the Benalla Showground leading up to Christmas.
