Don Firth has been re-elected Mayor for a second year, with Scott Upston being elected Deputy Mayor.
The appointments were made at a Special Meeting of Benalla Rural City Council on Wednesday, November 15, and are each for a one-year term.
Cr Firth was first elected Mayor after the general election of the council in October last year.
‘‘I would like to thank my fellow councillors for the confidence and trust they have shown in me by electing me as Mayor for a further one year,’’ Cr Firth said.
‘‘Benalla Rural City offers a wonderful way of life, with fantastic facilities and opportunities.
‘‘As a council we will continue to work hard to ensure our operations and transactions are transparent and rigorous and that the benefit of the good work of the council reaches all our residents and visitors.’’
This is the first time Benalla Rural City has had a Deputy Mayor and Cr Upston is humbled by his appointment.
‘‘I am excited, honoured and humbled by this appointment and by the confidence my fellow councillors have shown in me,’’ Cr Upston said.
‘‘I congratulate the Mayor on his appointment and look forward to continuing the important work of the council.’’
Cr Firth has now been Mayor for 12 months and feels that the way the new council has come together and worked as a team on behalf of Benalla has been a highlight.
‘‘Twelve months ago I’d have said that the main thing we have to do is get everybody bedded down,’’ Cr Firth said.
‘‘We had five new councillors including myself, coming in.
‘‘Four had never served on council before.
‘‘The most gratifying thing for me is the fact that every single one of the new councillors have A, enjoyed it and B, done their work effectively.
‘‘Not everybody does their work in the same way, but everybody performs, everybody brings something to the table.
‘‘That’s refreshing because it’s such a different group of councillors this time.
‘‘So I’m really happy with the way we’ve all come together.
‘‘It’s a group of individuals that have a common purpose and we’re moving towards that.’’
