Benalla Bowls Club’s A1 weekend pennant side continued its hot streak of form with a 92-73 win over title rival Wodonga on Saturday.

Benalla Bowls Club’s A1 weekend pennant side continued its hot streak of form with a 92-73 win over title rival Wodonga on Saturday.

Played in Benalla, the game was closely contested, with two of the four home players losing their individual battles.

But it was not enough to offset the overall score, keeping Benalla in the hunt for silverware over the Christmas break.

The side sits second in the Ovens and Murray Weekend Pennant A1 competition. The competition will resume on January 13, with Benalla playing away at Yarrawonga.

Benalla A1 playing coach Matt Robertson said it was a good way for the club to go into the Christmas break.

‘‘This time last year we were staving off relegation, and now we could be looking at a premiership,’’ he said.

‘‘We didn’t get to play (ladder leaders Corowa) in the rained out game. That’s the only one that I’m worried about.’’

In the club’s men’s singles championship, Robertson defeated good friend Shawn McMahan in a close-run game, the final score 25-24.

In the men’s minor single championship, Graeme Pitts could not overcome Chris Cooney’s challenge. The final score was 26-24.

Sharon Warfe took out the women’s singles championship over Gail Banfield in a convincing 25-4 result.

In the midweek pennant, the division one side defeated Wodonga 78-62 at home. S. Warfe won 26-22, M. Robertson won 31-15, and B. Armstrong lost 21-25.
