The backyard has become trendy, with everyday people taking on small-scale alternative farming projects on their own properties.

Some of the most exciting and clever home farming techniques will take centre stage at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo from February 16 to 18 — with everything from beekeeping to children’s activities.

A ‘‘crash course in beekeeping’’ will be delivered by the renowned Gary Beavis from Beavo’s Honey, through his how-to lecture.

Mr Beavis said the lecture was ideal for anyone, whether they already owned a hive or were simply interested in bees and beekeeping.

‘‘The lecture is just to give them an insight into what is required and to educate them on what is needed to have a backyard beehive,’’ Mr Beavis said.

‘‘A lot of people think it’s just put it in there and forget it, but a hive is basically a little animal you need to look after.

‘‘Urban beekeeping is becoming quite (popular), people want to have their own honey out of their backyard these days.’’

After starting with a single beehive in his backyard more than a decade ago, Mr Beavis was able to turn his hobby into a business and said there was potential for many others to do the same.

Budding young gardeners will have their own activities to take part in, allowing them to get their hands dirty through the Bunnings Shepparton DIY activities.

The Bunnings team will be on hand to help the youngsters as they create grasshead pot plants that they can take home and watch as they grow.

There will also be a sustainability-focused activity called Grow Your Own Water Crystal, which is set to provide much excitement for youngsters.

The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo runs from Friday to Sunday, at Kings Park.
