Saints seek players

Saints player Hayley Martiniello attempts to get away from a scrum of Bendigo Thunder players during semi-final two of the Northern Country Women’s League.

Benalla Saints are on the lookout for women interested in playing football this season.

The open women’s team (18-plus) will play in the Northern Country Women’s Football League against six other sides from the Goulburn Valley.

Co-coach Kylie Relf said the club was still looking for players to join the team this season.

‘‘With a number of players from last season moving away from Benalla to go to university and employment, we would love to see some new faces at training,’’ Relf said.

‘‘It’s a great opportunity to try something different, meet new people and improve your fitness.’’

Training is held Wednesday nights at the Benalla Showgrounds at 6pm.

Players from surrounding areas, including Mansfield and Euroa, are most welcome to play.

The season starts on Sunday, April 27.

Last year the Benalla Saints won through to the grand final in its inaugural season, losing to Bendigo Thunder.

‘‘We all learnt so much last season, it was a wonderful experience,’’ Relf said.

‘‘This season is all about continuing our improvement and understanding of the game.

‘‘It’s a new group and we are really excited about taking the field again.’’
