Activities for kids at the Euroa Cup

Things will be getting a bit wild on track for the upcoming Euroa Cup Day at Benalla Racing Club on Sunday, March 18.

Zoologist and television presenter Chris Humfrey will be on course, with his Wild Action Zoo in tow, to entertain Euroa Cup attendees.

Humfrey runs a zoo at his Macedon home and his collection includes more than 2000 native Australian animals, such as penguins, koalas, quolls and snakes.

A handful of them will be trackside with the Wild Action Zoo team, with Humfrey offering a hands-on experience for children and adults alike.

Country Racing Victoria marketing manager Darren Galley said Humfrey and his team had been a big hit at country race days throughout the state.

‘‘Chris Humfrey was the ambassador for our Kids Summer of Country Racing campaign this year, and people absolutely loved him,’’ he said.

‘‘Chris and his team entertained and educated people of all ages at a lucky handful of race meetings through the summer.

‘‘We hope the people of Benalla and Euroa turn out to see him this weekend.’’

The race day will have a family-friendly focus, with free show bags on offer to the first 200 children through the gates, and other activities including pony rides, face painting and jumping castles.

There’s plenty on offer for grown-ups too, with a seven-race card including the $20000 Euroa Cup and a full Fashions on the Field competition.

Benalla Racing Club manager Cameron Symes said the new March date for the Euroa Cup was better suited to the local racing program.

‘‘We used to hold this race day on the Sunday after the Melbourne Cup, but there were a lot of competing race days around that time, with Wangaratta, Corowa, Echuca and Mansfield all racing that week,’’ he said.

‘‘People were a bit tired of racing after Melbourne Cup weekend. By moving to the new March date in conjunction with the festival of racing we believe we can entice new families and racegoers to come and enjoy a great day out.

‘‘It’s a big day for Euroa and we hope everyone gets behind it.’’

Picnic packs are available to purchase online or on the day, while punters can plan ahead and secure two-for-one admission if they book online; there are also some all-inclusive deck tickets still available for $99.

The club will also run free buses from Euroa and Violet Town.
