Benalla Saints women’s team has started the 2018 season in the best possible way with a comprehensive victory over Nathalia on Sunday at the Showgrounds.
The Saints started the match with a flurry of goals, leading by 36 points at the first break.
With on-ballers Ally Reid, Jayde Burden, Georgia Spinks and Fiona Powles dominating the clearances, the Saints’ forwards were given first use of the ball and capitalised on the scoreboard.
Kelsey Piscioneri was in devastating form for the Saints kicking five goals for the match and setting up the victory.
Brittany Button, Donna Beckley and Nat Pritchard each kicked two goals as the Saints booted 14 goals from 30 scoring opportunities to win by 92 points.
Nathalia players never stopped trying and kicked a goal in the third quarter.
In addition to Reid, Burden, Powles, and Piscioneri, Chelsea Walsh, Beckley and Rachel Timperley were the best players in a great team performance.
Saints co-coach Kylie Relf said she was pleased with her side’s performance against the Purples.
‘‘Our midfield strength was very telling early in the game and our forward line made the most of its chances in front of goal,’’ Relf said.
‘‘We were extremely happy with the win from a team perspective with everyone contributing to the result.
‘‘We have an enormous amount of improvement in our game and we will need to perform well when we take on Echuca in a few weeks,’’ she said.
The Saints have the bye this weekend, before taking on the Echuca Bombers.
