Nature Week celebrated

Families who attend Tomorrow Today’s ‘‘PEEP’’ early years program recently celebrated Nature Week with scavenger hunts around the Benalla Gardens and Lake Walk.

Each day, families from different PEEP (Parents Early Education Partnership) groups met at the Weary Dunlop memorial and were given a checklist of landmarks to look out for and items to find, as well as collection bags to keep their treasures in.

Children were instructed to put on their ‘‘eagle eyes’’.

After finding the big cannon, the Anzac memorial, and the Australian flag, families made their way down to the boardwalk to count the ducks on the lake.

Continuing the walk, children spotted holes in some of the trees next to the cricket oval and looked for possums.

They sang lullabies to the possums, but none came out, so they must have been fast asleep.

Along the way children collected sticks, feathers, rocks, twigs, and leaves (soft and crunchy) to take back to the PEEP playroom at Cecily Court to use for creative art projects and nature play.

The walk ended with a picnic where children talked about their discoveries, followed by a great time in the children’s playground.

PEEP outings usually take place once a term and give families the opportunity to learn about things to do and see in Benalla.

Venues visited include the Library, the Art Gallery, the YMCA Aquatic Centre, Estia Health and Benalla Racecourse for the Annual Christmas Party.

PEEP is a free program for Benalla families with children aged 0 to 5.

Its main focus is on supporting parents as their child’s first educator, but it is also a great way for families to socialise, share their knowledge and experiences and to access a wide variety of information and support from the program’s many local professional partners.

PEEP is an important part of Tomorrow Today’s Education Benalla Program, aimed at improving educational outcomes for Benalla’s children and young people.
