Benalla will soon be home to six purpose-built units that offer a range of features specifically for elderly or disabled residents.
Off-road mobility scooter parking is one of the main innovations as builders look to cater to the town’s ageing population.
Brian J Howe Real Estate is offering the units and property consultant Travis Mullavey said since advertising them the response had been good.
‘‘There are six of these units, two are already sold and we had an open day two weeks ago where we had eight groups come through,’’ Mr Mullavey said.
‘‘It’s a great concept that is a bit different for Benalla and well suited to an ageing population.
‘‘What we’re finding is that more people are wanting to maintain independent living rather than going into an aged-care facility.
‘‘One reason for that has been the growth in government support for people who want to remain independent.’’
This is evident in the recently released Federal budget, which included funding for more than 14000 independent living packages.
The units, which are on Nixon St, are well suited for people who are not ready to enter an assisted living environment.
As well as mobility scooter parking they are designed with no steps, railings to assist movement throughout the unit and are being built close to shops and amenities.
‘‘The builder has also constructed a full concrete footpath right along Nixon St up to Church St to make it easier for residents to get around,’’ Mr Mullavey said.
‘‘And while they are only one-bedroom units, they are spacious with a separate living and dining room. They also have a low-maintenance court yard.’’
●The units, which are still under construction, will be ready soon and Mr Mullavey has asks anyone who might be interested to phone Brian J Howe Real Estate on 57626232.
