But with the delivery of the books the biggest challenge for organisers, Veterans’ Affairs Minister Darren Chester has stepped up to help ship the books to the foreign country.
The project, which helps village kids learn English, is an initiative of Brian Vial, who had four relatives serve in Papua New Guinea in World War II.
Local sources of books in Benalla include Vinnies, the Red Cross, the Salvos, the Baptist Church and local schools.
And once a shipment is ready, Peter Davis Rural, along with Smythe’s Seeds assist with packaging and dispatch.
Helping the cause is Canny Carrying Co Wangaratta, who have offered to get the books to Brisbane, where it will be shipped from, at no cost.
● Drop-off points for books can be found at Benalla Library, Steph Ryan’s office and the Benalla U3A office.
