Vale John Thurling
It is with deep sadness that ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls announce the passing of esteemed member, friend and fellow bowler John Thurling.
John passed away peacefully after a short but devastating illness on the evening of January 11 with his loving wife Helen by his side.
John loved his bowls and loved the club.
The club dedicate their wins on this day to John and sang the team song brought to the club by John in his honour. Rest in peace mate.
John’s funeral will be held in Albury on Monday, January 24 and the club will be putting on a bus for members to travel and attend.
Please place your name on the noticeboard if you wish to attend.
Dress will be uniform.
Friday, January 14 and Saturday, January 15 – Weekend Pennant results - Round 7
Division A3 – ClubMulwala 66 (18) defeated Yarrawonga 50 (0)
President Graeme Arnold paid tribute to esteemed member John Thurling who passed away recently and both clubs stood in silence in respect of a fellow bowler.
Played under lights at ClubMulwala for the first time in many seasons, Yarrawonga jumped out of the starting blocks and it looked ominous for the club early.
Great comebacks by all rinks resulted in an impressive win albeit in a rain affected game.
What a great friendly group of people the Yarrawonga Bowls Club are.
Some who had stayed a little later even joined in the club song which was sung in gusto in John Thurlings honour and they appreciated the inclusion.

Gary Parker, Graeme Arnold, Daryl Richmond and Jan Morton 17 defeated Maurice Lee, Jan Hermassoo, Ron Lamson and Geoffrey Hargreaves 15.

None of the rinks got up but 3 rinks kept their margins close. Ladder Position 7th
On Saturday, January 15, A1 played Wangaratta at home and lost by just 7 shots with 1 rink getting up.
Wangaratta is on top of the ladder so it was a great effort to have such a close game. Ladder position 6th.

YMGCR Bowls
Saturday Pennant had the A1’s travel to Corowa RSL on what turned out to be a wet and wild Friday night game with several new players up against their old side for the first time.
The team was determined to get them a win and they did winning 16/87 to 2/62.
Scott Widdison’s rink was in control all night, Presnell leading beautifully and Ray “Wrong Bias” Irvine and Disco Davies all having solid games and Scotty just topped the team off with some great bowls; they won 31/16.
Michael Szabo’s rink is looking rock solid and the team is combining well, they won 24/16.
Jimmy Lefevre’s rink just continues to go on their merry winning way and won 19/12.
Les Spencer’s rink got jumped at the start but fought back to lose 13/18.
YMGCR is 2nd on the ladder with next week’s game against archrival Wodonga at home and this will have a huge bearing of the makeup of the final 4.
A2’s played Yackandandah at home and won 18/106 to 0/50. With the last game before the break being a debacle, a good win was needed to get the season back on track.
Losing Robert Lidgerwood before the game saw the selectors make a few changes and they all worked out well.
Ray Brown’s rink was in control from the 1st end and won 32/11, Cat got back on the winners list to also record a big win 29/9 and Laureen battle hard all day but run out with a good win 27/14.
Greg Green playing his first game of the year as a skip had an epic battle and it took it to the 20th end to take the lead winning 18/16.
That now puts YMGCR back in the 4 and the percentage also got a much-needed boost.
Unfortunately, the A4’s were to play Corowa RSL at home but due to the 2nd green being out of order, they had to play at Corowa and they lost 2/66 to 16/74.
Ian Morffew rink won again 23/17, Rob Hummel battled hard all day and lost 13/17 as did Bob Evans also losing 13/17 and Marie Whitehead lost 17/23.
If this game was played on the green the outcome could have been a lot different.
B2’s played Corowa at home but lost 0/35 to 14/85, Terry Matthews rink was the best losing 11/26, Ross Lloyd lost 12/30 and Billy Butterworth lost 12/29.
The selectors would like to thank all the players who filled in at the last moment... thank you for helping your club out to put teams out on the green.
Midweek Pennant had the A1’s play last year’s premiers Wodonga at home where Wodonga dominated for a most of the game.
BUT the fighting spirit of YMGCR came back to win 14/58 to 0/52. After the 1st end, Miles and Spencer both dropped a 5 and Sanders dropped a 2, 0/12 and the battle was on!
Miles was down 0/10 but found a way to slowly get her rink back in the game and on her 20th end they hit the front for the first time and won 19/16.
Sanders was having a hard but close game and on his 20th end hit the front for the first time and won 17/16.
Spencer’s rink waited to the 21st end and they picked up a 5 to get them over the line winning 22/20.
A2’s played Moira at home and won 12/69 to 2/59. Looks like YMGCR have another real good skip in Mick Vaughan (playing skip for the 1st time for his new club). They had a resounding win 28/12. Young Stuart McNeill rink got off to a bad start but the rink just keeps finding a way to win and got there again winning 26/22, Ray Brown’s lost 15/25.
This puts YMGCR 2nd on the ladder 1 point from top.
A3’s travelled to Wangaratta and won 10/67 to 4/50. The rink of Les Balfour, Pam Dodman, Sue Evans and Lyn Baxter got the team over the line winning 38/17 and to top their great day off they picked up an 8 on the last end...magnificent.
Danny McNeill played in another close game and lost 17/18 (he has now lost twice by 1 shot in his last 2 games). Marie Whitehead lost 12/19. They currently sit 2nd on the ladder.
B1’s game at Swanpool was cancelled due to storm damage. Game will be played at a later date.
This week “RINK OF THE WEEK’ goes to Ray Brown, Bill Jenkins, Col Withers and Norm Winderbank with 32/11 on a countback from Les Balfour, Pam Dodman, Sue Evans and Lyn Baxter who got 38.
On Wednesday the Semi Final and Final of the O&M Over 60’s Ladies Pairs was played at YMGCR and in great news Laureen Smith and Claire Sanders won the final and will now represent the O&M at Bendigo.
They did it the hard way by beating Anne Miles and Sharon Warfe (Benalla) in the Semi and then beating Mary Tragardh and Cheryl Lewis (composite side)
Also, on Wednesday was social bowls and there were 20 players, and with 2 wins and +16 the winners were Norm Winderbank and Noel Millar and the runners up with 2 wins and +13 were MIck Klodinski and Doug McTeir.
Don’t forget the final of the Men’s Singles Championship will be played at 4pm on Wednesday the 19th, the ladies will be played at a later date.
On Sunday the O&M Single Championships start in both men and women, in the men’s Garry Sanders is in the last 6 (played at ClubMulwala) and in the women’s side Laureen Smith made the quarter final and Claire sanders has made it to the Semi Final (played at Rutherglen).
These games will be finished next week at the same venues.
Last week we lost a past champion of the club in Unis Boak. Unis won 2 club singles and with her cousin Joy Johnson they won 5 ladies’ pairs.
She also skipped in many of the Ladies Midweek A1’s champion teams in the early 2000’s.
To Alex and family our thoughts and prayers are with you. RIP Unis.
