“Australia Day next year is on a Tuesday, then the following year Wednesday then Thursday – we’ve got to think about those situations,” Cr Shaun Whitechurch said at council’s monthly meeting on February 18.
Corowa will host the 2022 event, Mulwala in 2023 and Howlong in 2024, as decided at Federation Council’s August 2019 monthly meeting.
Cr Gail Law praised the location of this year’s Australia Day celebrations at Memorial Park Howlong. “It was a credit to council to have the ceremony there,” she said.
Cr Whitechurch echoed Cr Law’s remarks. “Howlong raised the bar,” he said. Mayor Pat Bourke thanked Howlong-based councilor David Longley for his personal event support. “The horses and guest speaker were great,” the mayor added.
Howlong Pony Club made a great entrance with the Australian Flag on horseback. Australia Day Ambassador and well known radio broadcaster Andrew Heslop delivered an inspiring address to the 300-plus crowd.
