New tennis life members

Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club will honour two of its club stalwarts on Friday, October 18.

Barry Barlow and Dean Irwin will be awarded Life Memberships to the Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club, for many years of service to the club, in particular the running of the Easter Tournament.

For the past 15 years Barlow and Irwin have run the Western Riverina Championships held at Easter, an event that usually attracts around 250 players, of whom 95 per cent would be from outside the area.

The pair are both former club champions, and long-time participants in various club competitions.

Irwin, who has had about 30 years involvement with the club, said he was quite surprised by the honour.

“You don’t get involved and do all that work with receiving a Life Membership on your mind,” he said.

“I grew up with my parents helping out around the club and I was just following in their footsteps.

“I was first involved in the club as a player when I was about 10 years-old and other than 10 years away when living in Perth, I’ve been involved in the club ever since.

“I’m not really too involved now. I do a bit of coaching and help with the Easter tournament but I’ve taken a step back in recent years.

“In saying that it does feel good to be recognised and it’s quite humbling.”

After about 35 years of involvement with the DLTC, Barlow said it was all about helping a club that has helped him.

“When I came to the area I was very much welcomed at the club and I’ve been active ever since,” he said.

“I wanted to assist in running the Easter tournament as it’s a big asset to the town. It attracts a lot of visitors to Deni.

“I’m humbled by the Life Membership. It’s nice to be recognised but there’s a lot of people out there that I feel should have this honour before me.”

An evening function to celebrate their life memberships and the opening of the tennis season will be held at the DLTC Clubhouse starting at 6pm and includes an exhibition match, meal, presentation of life membership and background music will be played by Mark Ritchie and Nick Robinson.

The night will also serve as the final chance for players to register for the upcoming tennis season.

The Twilight Competition will start on Wednesday, October 23, running to Wednesday, December 18.

The Saturday competition will kick-off on October 26, finishing October 14.
