Former New Zealander Simply Optimistic was an interesting runner at Bendigo on Saturday.
He was an eye-catching fourth in the Benchmark 84 (1100m) at only his second start in 19 months.
The five year-old began slowly before making ground to finish a length from the winner.
He had not raced since winning on a heavy track at Randwick in June last year.
Winter success surely awaits this Brendon Hawtin trained gelding.
