Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula has welcomed the decision by Supercars to back the time-honoured regional fixture.
“Victoria is the home of motorsports in Australia and it’s great that Winton can once again host the best Supercars action and thousands of race fans in the heart of the north-east," Mr Pakula said.
The Victorian Government provided $1 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund in 2015 to upgrade the Winton track, ensuring it continues to be a hotspot for racing fans around the country.
Benalla Auto Club chief executive Chris Lewis-Williams said the government, in particular Mr Pakula as well as Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes, were present and instrumental in the negotiations with Supercars, as well as in securing a significant funding contribution for the Supercars which, without it, "would make it nearly impossible for the Benalla Auto Club and Winton Motor Raceway to afford on its own."
“We are thankful for the ongoing support of the Victorian Government to help maintain our standing as a historic Supercars venue and one of the state’s premier permanent motorsport venues,” Mr Lewis-Williams said.
