Benalla’s Mark Blyss featured in yoga book

By Simon Ruppert

Popular Benalla yoga instructor Mark Blyss has been featured in a new yoga book by well-known author Caroline Whitehurst.

Down Under Yogis is a collection of 70 inspiring and informative, personal stories from Australia's yoga community.

One of those stories is Mark's.

When Ms Whitehurst contacted Mark to ask if he wanted to be featured, it was a quick conversation.

“They contacted me as I run an event called Yoga Camp, and one of our recent participants was friends with the author,” Mark said.

“Caroline had asked them if they knew anyone in Victoria they could approach who might be interested in making the book - and they thought of me.

“So I went down to Melbourne to meet Caroline. She's from Western Australia, but she was travelling around Australia to do all the interviews.

“I was really pleased to be asked to take part as there are some very well-know people in involved

“One of those is Janine Allis, who founded Boost Juice. Her story is there and there’s a few other famous people in there, too.”

Mark has been a yoga instructor in Benalla for many years and has been running Yoga Camp for 16 years.

“I started Yoga Camp after going to an indigenous festival where a group of us decided to do a yoga practice together,” Mark said.

“I thought this would be really good to do as its own festival, getting a lot of like-minded people together to increase each others’ knowledge of what yoga can provide.

“Since then we've held it at various locations up in the high country of Victoria.”

Mark said preparing all the information for his bit in the book took some time.

“After meeting Caroline we had a few discussion over the phone and, from the time I had my first interview, it took about a year and a half before the book was launched,” Mark said.

“There was a major book launch in Western Australia about a month ago and the Victorian book launch was two weeks ago in Melbourne.

“I was so pleased with it. I thought it was great the first time I laid eyes on it.

“A lot of my yoga students have purchased the book, so it’s a good indication they enjoy my classes.”
