Benalla police confirmed this morning they have identified a man in connection with the assault on a pensioner in Bridge St on Friday.
Senior Constable Mark Kennedy said Benalla Police would like to thank everyone involved in identifying the man.
"Whilst most people do have to wear masks in public there are valid medical exemptions," Sen Constable Kennedy said.
"People with an exemption will have a letter stating that, however they do not need to show that to any member of the public.
"If you see someone who you believe is violating restrictions we ask that you call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
"People should not be taking the law into their own hands."
Sen Constable Kennedy clarified his comment on people having to carry their exemption letter, which he said was said in error.
"I apologise for any confusion this might have caused," Sen Constable Kennedy said.
The investigation is ongoing.
