A Tasmanian man has been convicted and fined for scaling the front face of Parliament House and flying a "Free Assange" banner.

Barry Jessup, 63, appeared briefly in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with trespassing on commonwealth land on November 11.

He was convicted and fined $50.

Julian Assange, 48, is in prison in England fighting extradition to the United States.

If extradited, he could face decades behind bars on spying and hacking charges.
