Alyssa was named the 2022 School Based Trainee of the Year for Riverina, and April is the 2022 Riverina School Based Rising Star.
Both are Year 12 students at Deniliquin High School.
Alyssa is currently completing a Certificate III in Individual Support in partnership with CareSouth, and April is finishing a Certificate II in Business Administration through the ANZ Bank.
Both award winners said they were surprised to hear their names announced on the night.
“I was in so much shock, but very excited,” April said.
“Knowing I was a finalist and having the opportunity to take part in it all was such a great experience.”
Alyssa said she felt lucky to be able to accept the award on behalf of those who have supported her throughout her traineeship and the Deniliquin community.
“It meant everything to me,” she said.
“I’ve put in so much work over the last year to do well in my traineeship. This highlights not only my traineeship, but Deni as a whole.
“It’s not just my award, it’s CareSouth’s, Deni High School’s and the community’s award.”
Alyssa said her time at CareSouth has been invaluable in providing her with the skills and knowledge which will help her fulfil her career aspirations.
“I want to be a paediatric psychiatrist, so working for a foster care agency I have learnt so much about disadvantaged youths and their struggles which will really help me in my future career,” she said.
April and Alyssa both recommended school based apprenticeships/traineeships for students keen to kick start their careers during school.
“It’s hands on learning you can’t get in the classroom,” said Alyssa.
“Go for it. Especially if there’s one available in what you want to pursue as a career.”
As the regional winner of the 2022 School Based Trainee of the Year award, Alyssa will now head to Sydney late next month to undergo an interview for the NSW Training Awards.
If successful she will be invited back to Sydney for the NSW Training Awards night on September 16.
