Vet day highlights shortage
April 30 was World Veterinary Day.
The industry used the day to shine a spotlight on the skills shortage in the profession.
Greencross Vets described this skill shortage as “severe” and pointed out there were 30.4 million pets in Australia but only 13,951 vets.
In comparison, there are 25.8 million people in Australia and 129,066 human doctors.
This creates a ratio of 2179 pets per vet versus 200 patients per doctor.

Fox bounty goes digital
To streamline payment processes for fox and wild dog bounty participants, Agriculture Victoria has introduced a digital bounty application system.
Registering is easy — access the form at the top of Agriculture Victoria’s bounty homepage and input your email and banking details.
The new system will ensure payment is quick and easy, and also allow participants to keep track of bounty applications.
During the transition to a digital system, hunters will still have access to the paper-based system.
For more information, talk to bounty collection staff on collection days or call 136 186.
Powerlines safety warning
Energy Safe Victoria is again calling for machinery operators to be more aware of their surroundings after 58 powerline-related incidents were reported across the state in the first two months of 2022 alone.
These 58 incidents include one serious injury and one fatality involving a man attempting to trim a tree in his front yard.
Dangerous vehicles include tipper trucks, augers, cranes, telehandlers and tractors.
If you are in a piece of machinery that hits powerlines, stay inside the vehicle.
If you are not inside the vehicle, keep at least eight metres away as you can be shocked approaching the vehicle.
