Rotary International has six areas of focus — peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy and economic and community development. However, due to concerns around the world, the environment was added as a seventh area of focus in June 2020.
The Rotary Club of Seymour Goulburn decided that would be a wonderful opportunity to implement an annual writers award for both primary and secondary students in the district using the environment as the central topic.
It set the theme ‘what the environment means to me’ and received entries from district school students expressing their concerns about current and future environmental issues.
Avenel Primary School student Hannah Taylor-White won the primary school section ahead of Puckapunyal Primary School’s Mia Marrinan.
Seymour College students tasted success in the secondary school competition, with Kylah Rogers the winner and Ben Newman runner-up.
The students each received an award certificate and cash prize late last year and the Rotary Club of Seymour congratulates them all on their achievements.
