Mrs Renwick celebrated her 80th at the Globe Monday last week, and on Thursday evening she and husband Lindsay enjoyed a soiree with friends at their Deniliquin residence to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.
‘‘We celebrated by inviting friends into our home, for a bit of a chat and discussion about our 60 year old wedding,’’ Mr Renwick said.
‘‘We had one of the original bridesmaids and a couple of guests from our wedding, and then of course neighbourhood friends.’’
Although they lived in Deniliquin, the pair chose to marry at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne on November 25, 1961.
The location meant that Mrs Renwick’s grandmother, who had poor health and couldn’t travel, could attend the wedding. The reception was held in a venue lining St Kilda Beach, and the honeymoon was spent between a motel in South Yarra and learning to water ski at Lake Mulwala.
It’s a sense of adventure the couple have carried through their marriage, taking them all over the world, from North America, to Europe, and across Southeast Asia.
But in all their travels, they’ve never wished to stray too far from home.
‘‘We’ve been very lucky — we’ve done a lot trips all around the world but there’s no place like home,’’ Mr Renwick said.
While Mrs Renwick was a new addition to Deniliquin at the age of 16, Mr Renwick was born and bred in town.
Their two daughters live at Albury and Airlie Beach respectively, and the family make every opportunity to see each other when they can. The couple also have four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr Renwick says working together is the key to a long marriage.
‘‘You’ve got to be tolerant and share — you’ve got to work through those ups and downs no matter who’s in the right and the wrong.’’
