Benalla's A-reserve squad started its season on the back foot, losing by three wickets against Rutherglen United at Benalla Gardens Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Bushrangers posted a score of 113, with lower order batsman Ashley Ellis top-scoring with 22.
Heading to the field, Benalla's Matt Knight did his best to hold Rutherglen back, taking 4-21, but an even contribution from Rutherglen's batting order had the visitors post a solid return of 7-155.
● C-grade lost its first match, beaten by eight wickets at the hands of Beechworth Wanderers at Mayday Hills on Saturday.
Benalla batted first, with opening batsman Dylan Barber leading the charge with 27.
But it was Beechworth's Stephen Harrison who ripped through Benalla's order, taking 7-29 to keep the visitors to 108.
The home team then went on to post a strong innings of 2-192, with Dylan Pool (62) and Austen Fendyk (64 not out) doing most of the heavy lifting.
● Benalla's under-16 captain and opening batsman Jack Fullager posted a half-century to start his season, making 56 runs - including seven fours - to lead the Bushrangers to 7-103 against Greta. The two-day match is set to continue this Saturday, with Benalla's bowlers gearing up to rip into Greta's batting order.
● The under-14 team got off to a great start in their two-day match against Rutherglen United, dismissing the visitors for 77. Benalla's Alyssa Priest (2-4) and Tyler Begnone (2-5) produced strong bowling records in their first game of the season, while Max Cullen (9 not out) and Will Hyland (16 not out) are set to resume batting for Benalla this Saturday, with the team sitting on 0-26.
● Benalla's under-12 team started its season in winning form, beating Ovens Valley United Black by 20 runs after 20 overs.
Benalla batted first, scoring 1-72, but with batters facing a limited 20 balls, up to five batsman retired not out, with Mitchell Cooney (11), Lucas Ham (10) and Cooper Binion (7) topping the run count.
In the field, Benalla kept Ovens Valley to 7-52, with Angus Leavold taking a wicket and two catches in his first game for the club.
● And Benalla's over-60 team won its match against Geelong on Sunday, beating the veteran side by 27 runs.
Geelong posted 9-115 after 40 overs, but Benalla proved too good, scoring 6-142 in just over 30 overs.
● Benalla's B-grade had the bye, with its season failing to get off the tarmac just yet after opening round matches were washed out.
