The women played their second game of the season on Monday when they took on Alexandra at Broadford. The team continued its winning start with a good 4 -1 win.
For the men, it was the pennant finals on Sunday and the division two scratch team flew the flag for the club when it took on Lancefield at Broadford. Unfortunately it was not to be this year as the team was unable to beat the strong Lancefield contingent, although it was a narrow loss. It was a great effort to get to the final, so congratulations goes to all those who helped the division two scratch team get there and those who played in the final.
In the regular competitions during the week, it was a par round for the women on Wednesday. Dale Stuart (15) was the winner with a square score. The extra competition was the best odd holes and that was won by Jane Fletcher with +3. The ball pool went to Stuart, Fletcher and Di Byrne with -2.
In the men’s stableford round, John Muscovich (21) had the top score of the day of 39 points to win. The runner-up was Greg Pell (6) with 35 points. Only two of the nearest-the-pins were claimed and they went to Greg Pell on the sixth and Gary Neville on the 17th. A score of 32 points on a countback was needed for the ball pool.
The mixed nine-hole winner was John Jennings (45) with 14 points on a countback from Stubby Byrne. Dilva Gratten also made the ball pool with 13.
On Thursday it was the Yea Bowl and Seymour had a couple of teams vying for the trophy. While there was no luck securing the bowl, Lisa Caines did win A-grade with 34 points.
Saturday was a stroke round for the men and Muscovich continued his good form to win the day with a great score of 88-20=68. Only two of the nearest-the-pins were claimed. Dave Pearce was closest on the sixth and Dave Hamilton was nearest on the 17th.
In the women’s stableford round, the winner was Shirley Wright (19) with 32 points. The extra competition was not claimed and the ball pool went to Wright and Byrne with 31 points on a countback from Stuart.
The Friday social six holes is stroke over holes one to six. On Saturday, both the men and women will play stableford.
Nagambie
The second week of the Finnigan four-ball provided plenty of drama while sorting out the men from the boys. The Nagambie course once again played long, making scoring tough for the majority.
Michael Sloan became a five-time winner of the event, while partner Daniel Hall claimed his first.
The pair sat quietly and patiently on +2 after round one, only to light it up in round two with the day's best result, +8, for a +10 total to win the Finnigan four-ball by two. Runners-up were week one leaders Des Phelan and Michael Mensfeld. They scored +6 in week one before battling their way around all day for a week two score of +2 and a total of +8. It was a solid round tee to green, with the pair’s undoing coming on the tricky greens.
Doug Neville and Wayne Le Cerf were once again prominent with a second week +7, the long-standing pairing finally utilising its massive handicaps for some good after a -1 first week to finish with a +6 total and claim third.
Well done to everyone who competed in this year's event. It is always a tough challenge and a most sought after award for all the club’s members. Sloan was heard saying the renaming of the event had merit, with suggestions such as the Michael Sloan Big Day Out or the Michael Sloan Cup all worthy of consideration.
The nearest-the-pins went to 'Spike' Nolan on the narrow third, Shane McCormick firing one home on the 13th and Terry Lowis, as so often is the case, taking out the 16th.
The Nagambie Golf Club would once again like to thank long-time sponsors Dean Brown Carpet Cleaning and ABS Shepparton for their continued support.
Next week's golf is a stableford event with J. Ezard on office duty and J. Mills in the bar.
