Yarrawonga 44 defeated Corowa 43.
3-0 Pigeons way in the games proceeding them. It was fair to say the pressure was on to get another win on the board!
A game that was built up to be a thriller and did not disappoint.
The Pigeons came out early with all guns blazing providing scoreboard pressure early. In true Sarah Moore form it was nothing but net from the word go.
Experience and poise was exactly what Yarra needed against a top of the ladder Corowa and was brought further to the goal circle by none other than playing coach Bridget Cassar.
With co-coach Laura Irvine a late out, Tilly Kennedy stood up into the centre role with ease providing goal assists and continual defensive pressure.
This was mirrored by Kylie Leslie who worked tirelessly against the physical Roos providing Pigeons goalers with constant scoring opportunities.
Laura Ryan’s unrelenting defensive pressure caused headaches for her opponent and opened up defensive turnovers for both Hannah Symes and Olivia Lovell.
A best on performance for the literally flying Symes taking intercept after intercept in the goal circle. A strategic half time change bringing Maddy Allan into the goal ring was the perfect ‘shake up’ helping the Pigeons get across the line by a single goal.
A true team effort by the Pigeons and a well deserved win!
B Grade
Yarrawonga 46 defeated Corowa 44
On a sunny winter Saturday, the B grade girls came up against a fierce and agile Corowa side, with fresh combinations amongst the playing group.
The defence combination of Jedda Nolen and Amity Drayton saw the pair combine well with each other to provide many turnovers for the team.
The last term saw young Amy Barnes seamlessly slide into the defence end with a stellar performance to rise the team to victory.
The goaling end saw Ellie Dickins and Alisha Leslie step up against a tough defensive outfit, with Helena West coming in mid-way through the second term.
The mid-court saw rotations, allowing for fresh legs each quarter against a solid outfit, with Emily McNamara and Maddie Kennedy providing strong drives onto the top of the circle, allowing for smooth feeding into the ring.
The game ended with the Yarra girls up by two with Amity Drayton and Jedda Nolen taking out the awards.
C Grade
Yarrawonga 41 defeated Corowa 27
C Grade had some late withdrawals this week leaving only 7 of the original team. This was a tough ask with the game being 3rd vs 4th on the ladder. Last time the two teams met Corowa it was a nail-biting draw so there were definitely some nerves in the air.
The Pigeons had 3 under 17s girls step up to the plate this week and boy did they perform. It was so great to see Georgie, Eva and Bella come up and play with the C grade girls and they stepped into the side seamlessly performing their roles just as we asked them to.
It was a real team effort with lots of rotations throughout the entire game and fortunately the girls came away with a 14-goal win.
This game proving just how far the team has come. The C Grade are looking very promising heading into the finals series.
Awards: Amy Barnes and Dee Moon.
Under 17s
Yarrawonga 54 defeated Corowa 27
A dominant display by the under 17s, leading from the front early and extending their lead each quarter.
Chloe Wheaton continues to play outstanding netball. She is athletic, courageous, and smart, leading her team in the defensive end but do dominating the transition of the ball down court after her turnover.
Combined with Morgan McCrae, this defensive combination makes every opposition attacking line up work for every possession.
Morgan has excelled this year, frequently recognised by senior coaches and playing in higher grades. Her coordination and ability to read the ball shuts down all opposition she faces.
A star in the making!
