The Benalla Croquet Club has a new president and club captain following its recent annual general meeting.
Maureen Freshwater has been named president, Christine Blay is the new club captain, Heather Wallace is the secretary and Jenny Briggs has taken on the position of treasurer.
Following changes to rules for the conduct of the monthly club’s championship, the inaugural event was held recently, with great success.
Twelve Benalla players took part and the club used the handicap system for the event.
The winner of the July club championship was Marcia Elliot with 28 hoops and the runner-up was Malcolm Nelson with 22 hoops.
The change to the rules made for exciting matches on the day, with close scoring seen in many of the games.
Referee Ruth Duffy attended the championship, which added another dimension to the competition.
Two coaching classes have been recently held at Benalla and were well attended by members.
The North East District Croquet Association (NEDCA) conducted its opening day for the new croquet season at Wodonga last week.
About 60 players entered from the north-east, with five players representing the club.
Each club representative said all games on the day were close.
If you have an interest in croquet, or just wish to watch the game being played, the club holds club days each Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting at 9am for a 9.30am start.
