Two popular members of the Benalla Lions family, Mel and Shirley MacDonald, were farewelled at a recent dinner meeting.
The MacDonalds are relocating to Bendigo before the end of the month to be closer to family.
Apart from being a major contributor to a wide range of Lions projects, Mel has been a volunteer litter gatherer on Mansfield Rd for 16 years.
He also delivered Meals on Wheels, volunteered at the Uniting Church and assisted with the Benalla Working Sheepdog Trials.
Shirley has been treasurer of the Lions Ladies for the past eight years and has managed volunteering at the Uniting Church.
Mel and Shirley were presented with a ‘‘Chris August Award’’ in recognition of their contribution to Benalla Lions.
This award is the highest available within the Benalla Lions region and honours a former District Governor who was the driving force behind establishing Wangaratta Lions Club in 1955.
Wangaratta Lions sponsored the establishment of Benalla Lions in 1957.
When presenting the award, Lions president Peter Poels thanked Mel and Shirley for their wonderful contribution to Lions and the Benalla community and wished them well for the future.
