Swanpool Cinema
Screening this weekend is Storm Boy (M), a worthwhile family film for its young actors, its setting, its environmental message and, of course, its majestic pelicans.
Jai Courtney, Geoffrey Rush and David Gulpilil star in this beautifully shot story that manages to be both heart-breaking and uplifting.
The grown-up Storm Boy tells his granddaughter the story of how he rescued and raised an extraordinary orphaned pelican named Mr Percival.
The many scenes with the pelicans are extraordinary and young Finn Little seems to connect with them totally.
Storm Boy (M) will screen in an afternoon matinee on Friday, April 12 at 1.30pm. Tickets are $10 and include afternoon tea following the film.
Ladies In Black (PG), directed by Bruce Beresford, is the second film on Saturday and Sunday nights.
Set in Sydney in the 1950s, school leaver Lisa joins the sales staff in fashionable department store F.G.Goode’s. Over a summer that changes her life, she befriends the colourful women of the women’s clothing department store.
Each is on the precipice of change — facing independence and working for a living. Repeat screening by popular request.
The double feature will screen on Saturday, April 13 at 6pm and on Sunday, April 14 at 5pm. Please note the earlier times due to the end of daylight saving.
Come along and support the new independent candidate for Indi, Helen Haines, at a fundraiser screening of Ladies In Black (PG) on Friday, April 12 at 7.30pm. Tickets are just $25 and include a delicious supper following the screening. Please purchase your tickets online through www.helenhaines.org/events
Limited tickets will be available at the door.
Plan ahead for the school holidays’ matinee of Peter Rabbit (PG) on Sunday, April 14 at 1.30pm. This special screening is a fundraiser for Peranbin Primary College.
Tickets are $17 for adults, $8 for students, (preschooler free) and include afternoon tea following the movie.
Screening on the weekend of April 20 and 21 is the delightful British comedy Swimming With Men (M), starring Charlotte Riley, Rob Brydon and Rupert Graves.
His job is a drag and he is not getting any younger, but accountant Eric discovers a new sense of purpose thanks to a group of similarly stuck-in-a-rut guys who have found camaraderie and self-worth through synchronised swimming.
Sure, they may be a bit paunchy, but they are determined to prove that they have what it takes to win the ultimate prize: the world championship.
Swimming With Men (M) will screen in an afternoon matinee on Sunday, April 21 at 1.30pm. Tickets are $10 and include afternoon tea following the film.
The second film in the double bill on Saturday and Sunday is the gripping Journey’s End (M). It is March 1918 and C Company arrives to take its turn in the front-line trenches of northern France, led by war-weary Captain Stanhope.
With a German offensive fast approaching, they use food and memories of life before the war to distract themselves. In contrast, a newly arrived young officer is excited to be serving under Stanhope, his former school monitor, as tensions build before the attack.
The candy bar always opens half an hour before screening so that patrons can purchase freshly made coffee, homemade biscuits, sweets and choc-top ice creams. Pastries can be ordered for a light meal at interval.
