The Benalla Wolf Pack kicked off its inaugural season in the Murray Cup Rugby League on Sunday with a 44-26 victory in a highly-contested match against the Wodonga Wombats.
The Wolf Pack started strong with Ethan Viant securing the first try of the game for the new club, however, the Wombats were quick to respond with a try of their own.
Undeterred, the Wolf Pack added three unanswered tries to the scoreboard before the Wombats hit back, scoring just before half-time to enter the break 24-12 in favour of the home team, Benalla.
The second half saw both teams hit the field determined to take home the win, with Benalla’s Newy Patiole scoring a quick try for the Wolf Pack before Wodonga took control of the match to add two tries to their tally.
A massive run through the middle of the field by Benalla’s Vaai Vaai and Augistine Alu saw the Wolf Pack cement the lead, with Alu crossing the line for another try for the Wolf Pack.
Alu was named Man of the Match for his impressive offence, solid defense and personal tally of three tries for the game.
The Benalla Wolf Pack will face off against last year’s Murray Cup grand finalists, the Murray River Warriors, next weekend in Albury.
