Cancer Pals will launch at the cancer centre on Saturday, September 14 with the aim of attracting volunteer advocates for the Trust Fund in every community within a 200km radius of the cancer centre.
Trust Fund Manager, Kristy McMahon, said these would be everyday people who had a passion for local cancer services and wanted to make a difference to their community.
“Our volunteer advocates will serve as a link between the Trust and the community,” she said.
“They will carry out activities like displaying posters on noticeboards, placing donation boxes in local shops and engaging others in fundraising and awareness raising activities for the Trust.”
For those interested in public speaking, there may also be opportunities to speak to local groups and accept cheques on behalf of the Trust Fund.
Mrs McMahon said becoming a community advocate was a fulfilling and rewarding role that makes a genuine difference to those in our region impacted by cancer.
“It’s a great opportunity to give something back to your community,” she said.
Henty resident, Kevin Fogarty, has been appointed as a volunteer advocate for his community where he has helped raise more than $2600 for the Trust Fund since 2017.
Mr Fogarty was encouraged to give back after his wife, Nadine was cared for at the cancer centre before losing her battle with ovarian cancer last April.“My wife was treated there and I really appreciated the care she received,” he said.
“While it’s not a huge amount that I raise, its $100 every now and then and every little bit helps make a difference.”
Based in Albury, the cancer centre services all areas within a 200km radius of the city with about two thirds of patients coming from regional communities.
Patients come from as far as Henty, Mansfield, Euroa, Mt Beauty, Deniliquin, Griffith and Khancoban.
The launch between 10am and 2pm will discuss the role of the Cancer Pal ambassadors, the services provided at the cancer centre and how these are supported by the Trust Fund.
An interactive workshopping session will also tap into ambassador’s local knowledge and pinpoint the best ways to distribute Trust Fund information across the region.
Morning tea will be available on arrival, and a light lunch will be provided.
