YMGCR Bowls
There was a big week of bowls at YMGCR. Wednesday saw 40 players with the winners being Peter Lidgerwood and the old champ in Dougie McTier.
They had a great score of +26 and the runners up with +24 were Gary Presnell and Bob Brokenshire. A couple of strange things happen during the day, G Presnell is one of the top markers in the O&M region (this assessment is of course solely his opinion) but Garry when a bowl hits the jack you mark the bowl not the jack and Anne Miles must have only played 10 ends because her team finished first for the first time in her long bowling career.
To make matters worse Peter and Dougie took out the jackpot (there was a few mutterings coming from Mr Eade direction). Sunday bowls saw 36 players compete in 2x4x2 nominated pairs competition and the winners on a count back were the team from Yarrawonga of Ray Butler and Shane Maddox with +9 beating local boys Garry Presnell and Les Spencer (on that note we would like to thank the Yarra teams for their support).
The jackpot went to two worthy winners in Ray Brown and Anne Miles, lucky numbers winner was Wayne Lowrie and Siggi Rempel.
Got a new award and it is called Spec Savers award and the first winners will be shared by teammates Don Ellis and Mick Reilly.
On one end Don walked down to the head and declared he had shot, still having his last bowl to go and decided it was too dangerous to bowl so he put in his pocket, only to lose the measurement easily.
Mick on the other hand gladly declared they had one shot, but he was actually three down. So the lesson here is Don has no idea of distance and Mick does not know who he is bowling with.
Both weekend and midweek players sheets are up, so please put your name down so the selectors can work how many teams to enter for the year.
From next Sunday we will start our coaching clinics (weather permitting).
This will start at 10.30 so you can then go and put your new knowledge into practice in our Sunday comp. Don’t forget to get your names down for social bowls. Sadly, we lost one of our oldest bowlers last week in Brian Cooper.
Never has there been a more determined player than Brian, even in his nineties he hated to lose. Brian was the local primary school principal so he would have been held in high esteem in the Yarrawonga community, he was also a good golfer and tennis player.
On a brighter note Les Balfour had his operation last week and everything went well.
He is still in Melbourne but would love to hear from his club mates so give him a call.
