Were there ever a question about the district’s identity as an ethnic crucible and a highly accepting community at that, just visit SPC or any of the other fruit-buying and processing facilities in the region and read the orchardists’ well-worn timber fruit bins piled in tottering columns.
The boldy stencilled, colourful names conjure a globe criss-crossed with cotton threads and all leading to the Goulburn Valley:
Petrovski, Zurcas, Radevski, Singh, Ahmet, Feiglin, Sfetcopoulis, Damianopoulos, Rendevski, Avramopoulos, Georgopoulis, Kalafatis, Varapodio and Lenne — intermingled with those of Anglo-Saxon descent — Cornish, Corboy, Thompson, Turnbull, Plunkett, Pickworth, Sweeney and Nethersole, among many others.
