Dylan, a Year 9 student at Benalla P-12 College, was awarded the scholarship by Kylie Mort and will receive individualised one-on-one tuition provided at her office at 61 Carrier St.
Ms Mort said a report from the NSW Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation highlighted the "Year 9 dip" - an Australia-wide issue where Year 9 students are more likely to display negative attitudes when it comes to motivation, behaviour and engagement.
“I wanted to support Dylan through this customarily difficult year by helping him to apply his academic potential and focus on his personal aspirations,” Ms Mort said.
Dylan has previously been a student of BPT principal Ms Mort; at the company office in Carrier St and as part of classroom support at the Benalla P-12 College, Faithfull St campus.
Ms Mort has spent extensive time with Dylan in a group classroom setting and during one-on-one tuition, and through this contact has had the opportunity to analyse his strengths.
Dylan has attended two sessions so far this term and said he enjoyed the lessons - particularly the way Ms Mort made learning fun.
“I’m finding it pretty fun,” he said.
“In the lessons we do some maths, and some English – whatever I need help with.
“And I’m finding that when I’m at school, what I’m learning here makes it a bit easier and I work faster.”
Ms Mort said she was keen to offer Dylan the scholarship as he had great potential and would benefit from a little extra help.
She approached the family about the scholarship in December last year after recognising Dylan’s academic potential.
“We’ve offered Dylan 12 months of tuition throughout Year 9, based on ongoing commitment to academic success" she said.
“We want to ensure that he gets the grades that he needs to fulfil his dreams of going to university and becoming a writer.”
