From last weekend Benalla residents might have seen ballast trains moving through the town.
These slow-moving trains precede upgrade works, delivering ballast to work sites along the rail corridor and may result in delays at level crossings.

Project works include:

Specific works occurred on the east track from 12 pm Friday, May 1, until 12 pm Monday, May 4, and included:
● Level crossing renewals at Old Hume Hwy, Benalla, the Benalla-Yarrawonga Rd, Benalla, and Sisely Ave, Wangaratta;
● Mudhole removal;
● Track tamping;
● Rail bridge upgrades; and
● Drainage work

Additional level crossings to be renewed in May include:
● Witt St, Benalla;
● Gould Rd, Winton; and
● Taminick Rd, Winton.

Since project mobilisation in January 2020:
● 120 000 tonne of ballast used;
● Nine level crossing renewals completed;
● Two pedestrian crossing renewals completed;
● Six bridge deck replacements completed;
● 67 km of track completed (ballasting and tamping);
● 27 km of drainage reinstatement;
● 27 km of access road reinstatement; and
● 6.325 km mud hole removal.
