Gates were opened on tracks in local state parks including the Reef Hills and Mt Samaria on Thursday, October 29.
Forest Fire Management Victoria Hume Deputy Chief Fire Officer Aaron Kennedy said the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria implemented seasonal road closures during winter and spring each year, as part of a driver safety and road-damage prevention program.

“Most roads (have) reopened . . . with some roads and tracks in bushfire-affected areas to remain closed due to safety concerns,” Mr Kennedy said.
“Some fire-affected roads and tracks in the Upper Murray and Ovens fire districts will remain closed due to the risk of hazardous trees and unstable road conditions following the bushfires.
“During the coming months, our crews and contractors will assess these areas and will complete road repairs and hazardous tree works, so they can be reopened to the public once they are safe.”

Seasonal road closures help limit the damage done to forest roads and tracks and in doing so, ensures dangerous and difficult sections of road are closed for driver safety.
“These measures also help maintain water quality in rivers, creeks and reservoirs by reducing the amount of erosion and silt washed away from roads and tracks,” Mr Kennedy said.
“We’d like to thank motorists for respecting the importance of this closure period, as it helps us better maintain roads and tracks.

“Our parks and forests are beautiful places to visit, and we encourage everyone to do the right thing and obey all road signs and rules so that everyone can enjoy the outdoors.”
