Benalla Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Murray Moser said police picked up the 26-year-old West Melbourne man after a Triple-0 phone call from another motorist about the man’s driving on the afternoon of Sunday, July 4.
The man was stopped on the Hume Fwy near the Midland Hwy at 2.20 pm as he was on his way to the snowfields.
As well as the speeding, he was also fined for driving without P plates on display and producing an international driver’s licence instead of the Victorian P-plate licence he held.
Sgt Moser said it was raining at the time and the road was wet.
“It’s stupid behaviour,” he said.
“Travelling at that sort of speed on a freeway in those sort of conditions was ridiculous.”
Sgt Moser said it was frustrating that people were still caught speeding at these sorts of speeds.
“It’s very disappointing that people aren’t getting the message,” he said.
“As highway patrol we are trying to minimise risk on the roads and people are doing this. It’s frustrating.”
The man was driving north in a Ford Territory when he was caught.
“It’s an ongoing problem we have with people heading towards the snow. We get ridiculous speeds,” Sgt Moser said.
He urged drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions.
“We want to see you get there safely,” he said.
