The festival’s art program provides a window into the people, places and stories that make our region unique, while giving visitors the opportunity to support local artists by purchasing original works and handmade creations.
From paintings and photography to ceramics, textiles and other handcrafted creations, the festival offers oodles of opportunities to discover something different, meet our homegrown creatives and find that special piece to take home.
Benalla Festival Advisory Committee chair and Benalla Rural City Deputy Mayor Justin King said the creative program was an important part of the festival.
“Art gives us another way to tell the story of our community and celebrate the talented people who live and work across our Rural City,” Cr King said.
“Festival exhibitions invite everyone to slow down, explore something new and experience the creativity that exists right here in our own backyard.
“Whether you’re an art enthusiast, looking for a unique gift or simply curious to see what our local artists are creating, there’s plenty to discover.”
A highlight this year is the work of Kathy Watt, whose photography exhibition Service, Courage and Resilience tells stories of army, navy and air force veterans from World War II to present day, through a series of portraits that visually capture their character, fortitude and valour.
The exhibition runs at the Benalla Visitor Information Centre, 14 Mair St from November 1 to 30.
Broken River Potters is opening its studio to the public over both weekends of the festival.
Sculptural and functional ceramics created by its talented members will be on show and everything exhibited is also available for sale, so it will be a great opportunity to buy something special direct from the maker at very reasonable prices. Head to BARC Hut 66 Hangar Ln, 57 Samaria Rd, Benalla.
Showcasing recent works by members, Broken River Painters is holding an art show on Saturday, November 7.
A group of local artists that meet regularly to practise and share their art, the exhibition and sale at the Benalla Scout Hall on Smythe St, will feature their work in a variety of media.
Visitors are encouraged to make a day of it, explore the exhibitions, meet local artists and makers and support the creative people who help make Benalla Rural City such an inspiring place to live and visit.
The Benalla Festival runs from October 31 to November 8.
