YH are committed to offering volunteering opportunities to the youth in the local area as well as older individuals which can provide a pathway to career opportunities as well as experience, knowledge and overall wellbeing.
Nurse unit manager Persian Ditchon and Intergenerational program volunteer Eliana Martin speak of their experiences of volunteering with Yarrawonga Health and why you should join today!
Persian Ditchon is the Acute/ Urgent Care Nurse Unit Manager and sees firsthand how beneficial volunteers are to the hospital and healthcare sector.
“I have met with three of the volunteers that assist us in the acute/urgent care ward and they have all been great and are there to help with whatever we may need,” Ms Ditchon said.
“It is great to feel that you have volunteers with a background in health care although that is not always necessary.
“We really count the volunteers as part of our team. They help us with topping up of the trolleys, answering phones and helping patients and visitors. Really just the jobs that need to be completed that we are unable to get to when we are busy with treating patients.
“We are so grateful to the volunteers and really appreciate what they do. We are always happy to see them.
“Volunteers, especially in our sector and ward play an important role. It is a team effort between the nursing staff, doctors and volunteers to assist the patients to get the best care possible.
“It is a rewarding job for the volunteers as well. They are passionate about what they do and it gives you a sense of fulfillment.
“I highly recommend locals to put their hands up to volunteer at Yarrawonga Health as we may all need hospital care at some stage and knowing there are selfless people around to make sure you get the best care possible is a calming feeling.
“It is a good thing to do!”
Eliana Martin is a student at Sacred Heart College who has taken part in the intergenerational volunteer program for two years and stayed on as a volunteer at Yarrawonga Health after completion of the program.
“Volunteering is very good to get to know people outside of school and outside my circles of sports and the likes,” Eliana said.
“I have really enjoyed it. It is good to learn more new things both about the people and about the health industry.
“As part of the program we made bird houses, played bingo and word games, planted in the vege garden and just had one on one chats to learn more about each others way of life.
“It was great to engage with the residents in a meaningful and respectful way.
“I love being here and just being able to help the residents where they need or be someone for them to speak to.
“Everyone is also there for me no matter what. That has been a great feeling.
“I encourage anyone to come and volunteer at Yarrawonga Health. They are always there for me and to know you are doing something to help someone who may need just that little extra bit of help has been rewarding.”
