Benalla is knows for its generous people, always willing to dig deep for a good cause.
It will no doubt upset many in the Rose City to find that food donations for people surviving in tough circumstances were ruined.
On Saturday, June 7, volunteers with the Benalla Homelessness Response Group posted to social media that they could no longer accept food donations due to this mindless destruction:
Food destined for those who need it most has been destroyed by mindless vandals.
Most of our news has been good news. Tonight we have to share a bit of — well — sadness. But we just want to raise awareness.
There are people doing it really tough in this community. And there are really generous folk who are supporting our community through their donations of food, time and effort.
Today, on two separate occasions, our volunteers had to clean up after vandals who ransacked the food supplies in the Community Pantry under the library.
This has happened on one or two occasions before, but not to the extent of today’s event. We had placed extra supplies in the locker due to some callouts for help.
Within two hours of cleaning and replacing supplies with a very small amount of food, the vandals struck again. This time in broad daylight.
Sadly, we are no longer going to stock the pantry. We do not want the food and the generosity of this community to be wasted by senseless vandalism.
We will find another way to support those who need the food.
If you need food support this weekend, please send us a direct message, or come to the Welcome Kitchen Community Meal on Sunday under the library between 4.30pm and 6pm.
Benalla's Welcome Place shelter needs volunteers Sunday to Wednesday 6pm–10pm and 10pm–7am.
