In a small rural city like Benalla, taking advantage of all opportunities, both online and off can be the difference between thriving and being forced to close doors.
On Wednesday, August 12, 30 local businesses were represented at McPherson Media’s Benalla Grows event.
Hosted by Benalla Ensign advertising consultant Sarah Jafer the event looked at ways local businesses can future-proof their operations, while explaining how AI and social media can help them grow.
Ms Jafer said the event featured three respected local guest speakers.
“We had Dennis O’Brien, president of the Benalla Business network,” she said.
“With a strong understanding of the local business landscape, Dennis highlighted the importance of supporting, connecting and collaborating with local businesses.
“His message focused on how businesses of all sizes contribute to a thriving local economy and why working together as a community is essential for future growth.”
The second speaker was Wally Armstrong – a strong advocate for Benalla and a driving force in bringing people, businesses and community organisations together.
“At Benalla Grows, Wally shared his perspective on the importance of community collaboration and the role local businesses, organisations and individuals played in creating a thriving and connected Benalla,” Ms Jafer said.
“Wally’s message reinforced something incredibly important — when businesses, community leaders and local organisations work together, they create opportunities that benefit everyone.
“Our final guest speaker was Ashley Day, owner of LS Precast.
“Ashley shared his inspiring journey from humble beginnings to building one of the region’s leading businesses.
“He spoke about the challenges and opportunities that came with growing a business and the importance of believing in what was possible, embracing opportunities and continuing to strive for improvement.
“Ashley’s story was a powerful reminder that success wasn’t built overnight. It was earned through vision, perseverance and the courage to embrace opportunity.”
Mr O’Brien said he felt the event was a success and offered an important message to local business owners.
“Both in life and in business relationships are incredibly important,” he said.
“The BBN is about connecting businesses with each other. But business to business is more than just, say if you're a plumber, talking to other plumbers.
“It's about connecting to the whole value chain and connecting to your consumers.
“It’s also about connecting with people that have expertise to help you with your business.
“I thought the presentation from Sarah and McPherson Media was very timely and very worthwhile.”
Ms Jafer said she had great feedback from attending businesses.
“They found the guest speakers engaging, informative and insightful,” she said.
“The different perspectives shared throughout the event provided valuable information and reinforced the importance of collaboration, connection and supporting one another within the local business community.”
