Wear it Purple Day was founded in 2010 and is an annual LGBTIQA+ awareness day especially for young people, based in Australia.
Supporters wear purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTIQA community.
Wear it Purple is a student-run, not-for-profit organisation.
Leading Senior Constable Paula Allen said Benalla Police were involved in the local community, in lots of different areas.
“Wear it purple is about supporting our young people, particularly those in the LGBTIQA community,” Leading Sen Constable Allen said.
“Supporting them, and connecting with our young people is so important.”
Victoria police have appointed a number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer liaison officers (GLLOs) across the state, and Leading Sen Constable Allen said Benalla had three GLLO officers.
The GLLO Mission Statement is to contribute to the creation of mutual trust between police, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender and intersex persons, so they have increasing confidence in police through the provision of fair and equitable policing service.
“Benalla's GLLO officers are trained specialist support officers, and anyone in the community can choose to speak to them directly,” Leading Sen Constable Allen said.
