Benalla group leader Jenny Wapling said that as part of the celebrations, local Scouts took to Bridge St to create a coin line, raising an impressive $1922.15 for the Benalla Homelessness Response Group.
The idea for the fundraiser came from one of the group’s leaders, who put the challenge to the youth members and asked them to decide where the money should go.
“The Scouts chose the Benalla Homelessness Response Group, recognising the important work it does to support people experiencing homelessness in the local community,” Ms Wapling said.
“The original goal was ambitious: to create one continuous coin line stretching approximately 200 metres from Carrier St to Nunn St.
“While the line ultimately was created across four different locations, the Scouts managed to build an impressive 85m coin line.”
The line may not have reached the 200m target this time, but Benalla’s Scouts are already looking at it as a challenge for next time.
“The fundraiser reflects the values that Scouting has shared with young Victorians for more than 100 years — getting outdoors, developing confidence and practical skills, having a go and making a positive contribution to the community,” Ms Wapling said.
“Benalla Scout Group would like to sincerely thank everyone in the Benalla community who supported the Scouts and contributed to the fundraiser.
“The generosity of local residents helped the youth members achieve an outstanding result while supporting an important local cause.
“Together, the Benalla community helped turn a simple coin line into $1,922.15 of support for people experiencing homelessness.”
