In May and June, 21 volunteer members of the Benalla VicSES Unit successfully completed the new mandatory minimum physical fitness for role assessment, providing surety that they can fulfil the demands of the various emergencies they are called to.
VicSES Benalla Unit volunteers train for two hours every Wednesday to maintain their skills in various competencies, including road crash rescue, general rescue (building collapse), storm damage (including trees on roads), land search and flood boat rescue.
The Fitness for Role assessment is scaled depending on which competencies a member holds.

Benalla Unit Controller Ailsa McMillan said that begins with a 2km, 4km or 6km weighted pack hike carrying 5kg, 10kg or 15kg, with obstacles to step over, under or on to, within a set timeframe.
“The second part includes six stands testing various skills, including dragging and hauling, a ladder lift, tool carry over obstacles, and a sandbag carry,” Ms McMillan said.
“The dedication and capability of the Benalla VicSES volunteers really shows, with all attempts being successful.
“We would like to thank volunteer assessor Damien French from the Wangaratta Unit, and also the Benalla Hockey Club for the use of their clubrooms and field for the assessment.”
