Big hay fire at Mathoura

It had started in the hay shed and completely destroyed between 1200 and 1500 bales.

Mid Murray RFZ operational officer Col Munro said firefighters made the site safe and then left it with the property owner to manage the fire.

Given the number of bales burned and the intensity of the blaze, Mr Munro said it would take some time before all the bales were fully extinguished.

The statutory Bush Fire Danger Period is expected to end on March 31.

This means landholders no longer have to apply for a permit for burns, but the Mid Murray RFS says that fires lit on April 1 or beyond must still be registered with fire authorities.

Using the online portal at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify, all fires throughout the year must be registered at least 24 hours before being lit.

Notifying the RFS of your planned burn can help reduce unnecessary emergency calls.
