The cost is $10 and a one-off $10 for a badge.
The club is a vibrant, well organised, not-for-profit community organisation, dedicated to citizens interested in gardening and horticulture — catering for inexperienced to serious gardeners, designers, landscapers and collectors of rare plants.
The club was formed in 1985 and life member Shirley McGill is our only original member — she has given 41 years’ service to the club.
She was our first secretary and continued this task for 15 years. She was also an accredited member of the Australian Horticultural Judge Association, judging at shows and at club meetings for many years.
The club conducts monthly meetings (February to December) at the Benalla Bowls Club at 7.15pm on the first Tuesday of the month.
Meetings consist of a guest speaker, showbench competition, trading table, raffle (with great plant prizes), plus giveaways such as garden magazines, bulbs, seeds, cuttings etc.
A monthly newsletter keeps members informed about club activities, with articles on plants, monthly garden tasks, showbench competition, reports on outings and guest speakers, organic treatment of pests etc.
To promote the club, we are attending The Community Expo at the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre, Ackerly Avenue, on Sunday, October 11, from 10am to 2pm, and will provide a colourful display of vital information.
There will be membership forms, fun children’s activities, bee fact sheets donated by Bunnings and giveaway bags of seeds.
Come along and talk to our members, ask questions and join the club.
Other club activities include garden visits, both locally and throughout north-east Victoria, visits to other clubs, bus trips, a winter celebration and a Christmas luncheon.
You are welcome to join our October outing on Tuesday, October 20 to Sophie Arendt’s half-acre, well-established, beautiful garden and enjoy a delicious morning tea in the morning.
Afterwards we will head to Kym Stubbs’ garden — a relatively young garden, designed with a real artist’s flair (see her latest mosaic works) — and enjoy an afternoon tea.
Further promotions will be at the Benalla Agricultural and Pastoral Society Show on October 16 and 17. (Note: we are sponsors of the Horticultural section.) Membership information, forms and free seed giveaways will be available.
Visitors and prospective members are welcome to all club activities, so come along and consider taking advantage of half-price membership.
Another activity for November is our club’s plant stall on Market Day, Sunday, November 8 in the Benalla Botanical Gardens as part of the Benalla Festival. Quality plants grown by club members will be available at reasonable prices.
Our annual Christmas luncheon will be held on November 18, where all members are welcome to attend and bring a friend.
Consider coming along to participate in our activities, learn from our amazing speakers and take advantage of half-price membership.
