The event is the brainchild of the Fighters Academy’s Scott Maskell, who is hoping it’ll put Cobram in the competitive boxing spotlight.
“I’ve got a heap of matches planned ... up here it’s getting people interested in a new sport for here,” he said.
“It’s bringing boxing to the country and up here it’ll be really good.”
Doors at Cobram Sports Stadium will open from 5pm with exhibition and novice fights kicking off at 6pm, before moving up with more senior competitors later on while a food truck is set to keep everyone satisfied.
Fighters from across the state and as far as Deniliquin are competiting, including Cobram’s Shaun Robbins and Caleb Goesch, as well as 15-year-old Kohan Joseph from Tocumwal making his debut.
Cobram-based fighter Marcus “Dangerous” Davis will also be defending his current state title on the night.
The best fighter of the evening will be presented with the inaugural Leigh Maskell Cup in memory of Scott’s brother, who was a passionate and talented boxer.
Scott said the event would also bring in extra attendees, including new visitors and tourists to Cobram.
“People in Melbourne don’t really know Cobram’s here, it’ll bring some more tourism in,” he said.
“If this one goes good, I’m hoping to hold more ... we’re hoping for two (fight nights) a year.”
Cobram’s inaugural fight night will start at 5pm on April 30 at the Cobram Sports Stadium. Bookings required for tables. Tickets are $35, with a seniors discount and kids under 12 years free.
