Benalla Art Gallery will present a dynamic series of artist-led workshops in the coming months, offering participants the opportunity to explore drawing, portraiture, printmaking and painting in a hands-on, supportive environment.

While the gallery undergoes redevelopment, all workshops will be held at the Pop-Up Benalla Art Gallery, 75 Bridge St East.
The program begins on Saturday, May 2 with ‘Drawing Nature in Graphite’, led by Albury-based artist Karen Brown.
Inspired by the natural environment along the Murray River, Ms Brown will guide participants through techniques for capturing fine textures and intricate detail in graphite, suitable for beginners through to those refining their skills.
The workshop runs from 10am–3pm, and costs $70 for members or $80 for non-members.
On Saturday, May 16, artist and educator Janet Leith will deliver a Beginner Portrait Class, from 10am–2pm, introducing participants to the fundamentals of proportion, placement and tone in portrait drawing.
The Bus, by Daniel Butterworth. Mr Butterworth will be hosting a workshop at Benalla Art Gallery's pop-up store in Bridge St East.
The session includes step-by-step instruction followed by a guided model study. Ages 15+, and the cost is $60 for members or $70 for non-members.
Printmaking will also feature strongly in the upcoming workshops, beginning with ‘Where We Live’ on Saturday, May 23 from 10.30am–4pm, led by King Valley artist Anita Laurence.
Participants will explore local landscapes and personal connections to place, developing their own linocut print using traditional carving and printing techniques. The cost is $90 for members or $100 for non-members.
On Saturday, May 30 from 10am–3pm, acclaimed painter Daniel Butterworth will lead an expressive painting workshop using house paints on reclaimed cardboard.
Participants will gain insight into Mr Butterworth’s loose, confident style while creating their own works. The cost is $90 for members or $100 for non-members.
The program concludes on Saturday, June 20 with ‘Drypoint Etching’, from 10am–4pm, led by master printmaker Bill Young.
Participants will learn intaglio techniques, including mark-making, inking and printing using a roller press. The cost is $90 for members or $100 for non-members. All experience levels are welcome.
All materials are supplied for each workshop, and bookings are essential.
Benalla Art Gallery Director Eric Nash said the program provides a valuable opportunity to engage directly with practising artists.
“These workshops support hands-on creative experiences while offering insight into the diverse practices of artists working across our region and beyond,” he said.
“They’re designed to build confidence, deepen understanding, and inspire new ways of seeing and making.”
